In October of 2015, a gas leak started in a huge underground storage field in Porter Ranch, which is on the outskirts of Los Angeles.  The methane gas leak, one of the largest in American history, has caused thousands of people to move to a temporary home or hotel.  The sulfurous cloud has made many of the residents sick.  It’s not known if these ill  effects are long term.

A SoCal Gas spokeswoman confirmed the well was lacking a safety valve, which could have prevented the leak. To finally stop the leak, heavy fluids were injected into the well and cement was pumped in to make a seal.  Even though the leak has been plugged, residents are waiting for more tests to assure themselves that it is safe to return.

The gas company waited three days to report the huge leak back in October. On February 10th, they pleaded not guilty to criminal charges.  Environmental campaigner, Erin Brockovich, described the Porter Ranch leak as, “the worst environmental disaster in the US since 2010.”
